Colours in Architecture

There are 7 days left for this #GuruShots Challenge and I’ve submitted a fairly eclectic mix of photographs – see below:

From left to right:

  • A jail in the Badlands, South Dakota – fairly sure no longer used! :-)
  • A hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates – an very impressive yet completely OTT and odd place. I’d like to go back and see some more but the place seemed almost overrun with Ex-Pats while I was there.
  • A shop front in Hoi An, Vietnam – loved the setting of the shopkeeper taking time out and reading waiting for customers but hardly worrying about an empty store
  • Outside Area in the Monastery of San Francisco, Lima, Peru – the orange paint was oppressive. Well worth a visit – has a surprise in the catacombes – not really for the faint-hearted.

The Top Photos in this Challenge are outstanding and my images will not be able to compete. See them for yourselves here and you are one of the photographers, congratulations, amazing work.

Update: a Premier level finish which I’m very happy about. I didn’t make any swaps and the votes were as follows:

  • Peru image received the most votes with 138
  • South Dakota received 119
  • The seated and reading gentleman in Hoi An achieved 112 votes
  • Finally, the Dubai shot managed 100 votes

Solitude

I’ve submitted a late entry to the latest #GuruShots speed challenge – this one is entitled Solitude.

There are only around 77 hours to go before the challenge closes and only one photo (swaps allowed) can be submitted / displayed at one time. I’ve opted to submitted a photo I took a few weeks ago of a single tree in the Baltray dunes in Co Louth. This image achieved 1 like and of the 408 views had 246 votes so I’m hoping this speed challenge goes well. As ever, an update will be posted at the end of the challenge.

The image was taken on my Nikon D3400 and I focused up at the bottom third – the lens was the kit Nikkor 18-55 mm.

Lone Tree in Baltray_Vibrant

Update: It’s really interesting to see how other people express solitude in their images.  I think (at least I hope) I’ve conveyed this as simply  being alone. Many people have uploaded images that seems to focus on loneliness and a great deal of these images convey sadness. As I had a spare free swap,  I thought I’d switch the image of the above image of a tree for another one! :-)

Machu Picchu Tree

Taken in Machu Picchu, Peru, the mist rolling across the Andes moves quickly. It is thick, cold and very very damp and can completely blanket this small tree and even the large peak behind the citadel that seems to feature in approximately 90% of all images I’ve seen seen of this incredible UNESCO site. I didn’t walk along the Inca Trail – sheer madness – but took a bus up the side of the mountain after taking a long bus trip from the fantastic city of Cusco.

The image was taken on an ancient but loved FujuFilm FinePix F480.

The ‘Solitude’ Challenge ends in about 50 hours – I think this swap has already been successful but I’ll wait until the challenge comes to a close before posting more.

Update: Delighted that I achieved 600 votes in total which resulted in an Elite ranking. Hurrah!

As ever some amazing Top 50 photographs on display but all those in the Top 40 (bar one which featured an image of a moose and another one of a yacht) had a very similar there. Generally there was a single figure standing in silhouette with their backs to the camera facing a sunrise or sunset. Interesting.

Wonderlust 2018

Although I couldn’t describe myself as a globetrotter, I’ve been lucky enough to have to already crossed off a number of items from my bucket list. Unfortunately, I either forgot to take a camera (d’oh) or the images ‘snap shots’ and not particularly good enough for entry to this GuruShots challenge.  Mind you, I have to travel on business to Chicago one February and forgot to pack a warm coat (double d’oh).

I’ve dug out some old iPhone images of  trips including a trip to Skellig Micheal, Co Kerry, Ireland and an island off the coast of Zadar, Croatia. The image below is that of Conway, North Wales which I’ve also included. It’s not particularly exotic but a wonderful place to visit. This is a view of the harbour which is located directly in front of the magnificent castle. To view the other images submitted in this challenge, you can view my GuruShots profile page.

Two shots I would have liked to have included but for poor image resolution I was unable to submit are:

  • Lama on the Aliplano, Bolivia
  • View from Rum Point, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Neither image is particularly ‘landscapey’ but I really enjoyed the days I took both images.

Alta Plano Peru

Altiplano, Bolivia

The above image was taken in northern Bolivia just south of the Peruvian boarder back in December 2016. It shows the farmer’s home and one of her herd – a wonderfully woolly red bad boy. She had also recently helped to deliver a pure white blue eyed ‘cria’ (baby lama) which has to be one of the cutest beings I’ve ever seen. I was so taken with it, I forgot to take a picture but trust me, he was beautiful. The Altiplano is a stark and imposing part of the world and life there must be tough.

In contrast, Rum Point is probably the most stunning of Grand Cayman’s glorious beaches. Scattered around the beach are hammocks, bars and luxury hotels where people get some rest and relaxation in the Caribbean sun. The water is warm and clear – a little further into the North Sound and you’d bump up against turtles, stingrays and possibly a tiger shark. It’s breathtaking and the colours are stunning but it’s most definitely missing a lama or two.

As usual, I’ll update this post when the ‘Wonderlust 2018’ Challenge has come to a close.

Update: It’s 12 April 2018, and the challenge has just ended. I achieved a Premier level, which  I’m very very please about, collecting 563 votes and 600 GuruShots points.

This is how the voting broke down and the images are (left to right):

  • Skellig Michael, Co Kerry
  • Croatia – if I remember correctly it’s an image taken somewhere around Telašcia Nature Park
  • Mornington, Co Meath
  • Rowing Boats on the Banks of the Boyne, Co Meath

Wonderlust 2018

I’m very happy with the result – onto the next challenge!
